i'm having a little trouble identifying (what i think is) a wooden prop centre. it has a clock mounted in the centre (waltham watch co. usa) but the prop is stamped with the broad arrow/crows foot.

The wood is stamped: A.I.D. W51, with the broad arrow, with a capital "A" above, i always assumed the "W" prefix to be american?

any help appreciated, max.

That's a British inspection stamp. The "A.I.D." refers to Aeronautical Inspection Department, formed in 1913. See this stamping from a Sopwith propeller. Usually if there are additional stampings within the box it refers to a specific inspector.

many thanks for that. The clock seems to date 1918 from the serial number so i think as far as ID goes thats as close as im going to get.

It's unusual to have the inspection stamp and not have drawing numbers stamped on the side of the hub. Those numbers, of course, could identify the engine and aircraft applications for it.
