  • Farman 150 hp Renault Propeller

    Hello,
here is another one: I recently came across a propeller with the following stencelling on the hub:
    B
    DG 2395
    D 2-70
    P 2-00
    HP150 REN
    M FARMAN
    B 27656

It also bears the four Aircraft Inspection labels as well as the stencelling '5/1917'.
It carries metal protection at the ends. Does anybody have any information about the 150 hp Renault engine and which planes used it? I am only aware of the 80 hp variant that was carried by the Farman Shorthorn and Longhorn planes. The label 5/1917 could indicate May 1917 as the date of the inspection but I am also not aware of any comparable markings at other propellers. Any information is much appreciated!

Nice prop! It's not common to have so much useful information stamped on the item.

        Hi,

Probably the Renault 8Ga. At least the Farman 1.40 used it. See this PDF (in French) page 20: https://www.hydroretro.net/etudegh/l...on_renault.pdf

Thank you very much pmdec! That was excellent information. Use of this propeller with the Farman F40 and the Renault 8Ga would also fit with the stamped date. Also, I found pictures of this pusher propeller with the appropriate metal sheath.

Even though this Renault propeller is a left hand thread it's clearly a pusher configuration. https://woodenpropeller.com/Salmson_A2A.html

To follow this up, apparently the UK Naval Air Service purchased in 1916 ca 50 Farman F.40 with exactly the 150 hp Renault engine. They were in operation until end of 1917. So it‘s very likely this propeller of British origin and inspection was destined for those planes.
