Hello all,
I'm new here to this site, I thought I'd share with you all something that I recently inherited from my wife's nan. This propeller was originally given to my wife's great grandad as a present from a neighbour who, as the story goes, was interested in pursuing a relationship and this was a courting 'gift'.
I have been in contact with the dehavilland museum who were only able to really tell me that the propeller would have been manufactured at their dehavilland's Hatfield works going by the July 1936 date.
From the finish it appears to be in an unfinished state, the wood is rough to the touch and there is no evidence of any varishing. What is the forums thoughts? Was this ever used on an aircraft? Any tell tell signs?
From the markings I have been able to read the following,
DRG NO D.H. 5220/H/9
GIPSY II & III
GIPSY MAJOR
L.H.
The other side of the centre reads the following,
D6 4 P4 II JULY/36
A.C.44423
On the bottom of the centre are the numbers 44423.
The total length of the propeller from tip to tip is around 192.5cm, or just under 76 inches.
I would love to know what aircraft this came from, although I'm aware this will be almost impossible to tell.
Going forward I would love to preserve the propeller in the best way if anyone would be able to point me in the right direction. I have used a little brasso on the leading edge and the colour has come back beautifully.
kind regards
Mark
