  • Albatros propeller ??

A guy is trying to sell this prop as an Albatros DVa propeller. Can someone confirm (or deny) this please ? I am sceptical due to the absence of prop bolt holes in the hub, and some damage at the hub where a piece of wood came loose. This prop may have never flown because of this. I doubt if this damage happened whilst in active service on a plane.
The HP rating/diameter and pitch may be correct for this plane and engine ( Mercedes ?).
I will try to attach some pictures.
I hope someone can help ?

    Many thanks.

How much is he asking for it? I wouldn't consider it "collectible". As you suggest it's probably a factory reject. It's been altered with a repair. Its original varnish has been removed and re-varnished. (Note the "shadow" appearance aroung the decal.) And I'm not sure it can be specifically linked to the aircraft claimed.

German propellers can be notoriously hard to identify, mostly because they rarely identify a specific aircraft - a feature that's very important to any buyer. Bob Gardner was our expert on German props, but he also lamented about how much time and effort he spent trying to identify them, often with no appreciation from the person posing the question.

I can take a look in his books to see if anything jumps out, but I still would not consider paying much money for it.

This propeller isn’t for a Mercedes engine, the a big clue is in the marking: BMW llla. As far as I can ascertain, that engine was never fitted to an Albatros DVa.
The absence of bolt holes might be explained by the possibility that this propeller was intended for use with a Rupps fastener, in which case I would expect there to be four relatively shallow holes in the back of the hub.
The missing piece looks as if it has been deliberately removed; I have seen similar damage to other propellers where this has been done to accommodate a winding mechanism for a clock.
I would be extremely cautious about taking this at face value as an Albatros propeller.

        @ Dbahnson :

In reply to your question :
He is asking 1500 euros, which equates to 1560 US$.
What is your opinion about this price please, given its condition and unknown origin ?
        Sincerely,

        WDS

As a collector, I wouldn't be buying it. If someone were just looking for a wall hangar I'd say it's a little overpriced but might suit that person's needs.
