By summarizing all the documents you have communicated to me, is it possible that this propeller was mounted on:

a Nieuport 17 equipped with a Rhône 9jby engine of 130 hp all between 1917 and 18 without leaving a trace in the documentation

Thank you for the new pics.
I suppose is prop is far larger than 2'51" wich would be too short for a prop of that era! Perhaps 2m51? If true, the prop was made for a Nieuport 17 ("Nie XVII") fitted with a Le Rhône 9Jb ("Rh 130 HP")wich was 110 to 120 HP in 1917-1918 and after 130.
This serial (37) is not documented in French props list made by French Military at the end of 1917 nor in the "American papers" which are from 1918. This, and the fact the engine was 130 HP is an indication the prop was made after 1918 or, at least, at the end of that year.
The decal has also a design different of that on 1917 and 1918 props: it is the first of this kind I am seeing: could you send me a large and very clear picture of it (pmdecombeix at yahoo dot com)?
As Dave said, the small squares are French airworthy stamps: inside them, there are the letters SFA for Service des Fabrications de l'Aviation [militaire). Those stamps were square until 1922 (after, they are hexagonal).

The writting "Special 18" is there because the prop is not made from ~20mm thick laminations (as usual) but from very thin ones (about 5mm thick) which was a specific fabrication by Paulhan and De La Granville.

Just a word for Bob: Not a word for my answer in his 20th March edit: French people are no more polite than many English forumers... And no pic, posted nor mailed, of the decal! Probably too hard a work!

And to correct the last words added to the first post: the propeller was made for Nieuport XVII but has never been fitted on a plane as the flat side shows.

I am beginning to re-think this whole forum thing, and I'm re-considering Bob's suggestion several months ago that we should just make it a paid service. I share in the disappointment that there seems to be little acknowledgement or appreciation from some members who post questions, get detailed answers, then seem to disappear. Maybe it's just a sad demonstration of the human condition. Maybe there are other good reasons.

But money may be the best way for a poster to demonstrate his or her appreciation for the work that is done here. It's a shame, because some people do show it in their responses, but it's certainly an insult when others don't.

I'm going to work on this again. It will take some time to come up with a plan and we may just have to try something out and re-think if after a few months, but what we're doing now doesn't have the reward that it should have for all of our efforts. I don't want to just shut it down, because there is still a lot of useful information stored here, but I'm looking at a way to "privatize" it somehow so that we only have members who contribute (one way or the other) to the community.

While I don't post often, I read a lot and often search for information here.

I appreciate this forum and thank you for all your work in making this place a great reference.

I try and give back by posting on my thread about my prop when I find something new.

I think most people who find this place are just selling. They get the info and move on. At least those props are being recorded and referenced.
