Navy Propeller-maybe a pusher for Curtiss HS-2L"Thanks&

I have an old propeller I would like help on.
This site is great!
I will get some pictures this morning and post them also

I know it has a 8" bolt hole diameter
and the bolt holes are 1/2 inch
it has an outside metal diameter of 10 inches
and it has an inside metal diameter of 4 inches
it has a hub depth of 4 1/2 inches
it has a center bore of about 4 inches
and the back side has a square cut in it

it appears to be bored out with a chisel
and the dimensions are not exact

It has navy symbols on it
and these numbers

PG 344 (not sure about this I need to look at it again)

I am working on getting the pictures uploaded.


In my research it appears to have been on a Liberty V12 Motor
and this is half of a 4 propeller because of the square notch cut
out of the back. They used to bolt two of these together?

It's part of a 4 blade combination for a Liberty engine, the two notched part of the blades locking together in the hub. I don't know specifically what aircraft it was used on, but the "SE" refers to Steam Engineering, which is the branch of the Navy that procured propellers in the late teens and early twenties.

Is this a Pusher?

Is this a Pusher Propeller??

I know the Curtis NC (Nancy Boat) had one Pusher
I know the Curtis HS-2L had a Pusher
I know the Curtis HS-1L had a Pusher
I know the Triplane GAX/GA-1 had two pushers but was in the mid 20s

What other Navy Boats had a Pusher with a Liberty Engine?

It was likely a pusher application. You can't ever tell that purely by the appearance of the propeller, but the Liberty engine rotated counter-clockwise when viewed from the front, so would require a right hand rotating propeller in its typical tractor use. If a Liberty is used as a pusher it would use a left hand rotating prop, which yours appears to be.

From pictures I have seen it "appears" to be from a
Curtis HS-L2 but as you said it is difficult to know for
sure.

I am going to call the Pensicola Florida Navy Historic Library.
I was told there were two old guys there that knew a lot about old
Navy planes.

A prop which looks similar to yours

My wooden prop looks very much like the pics you posted on May 8 2007. Here are the specs for mine.
I would be glad to send you pictures and/or more measurements if you address them to my wooden prop forum name of W1fik.
The rare spec on my prop seems to be the four bolt holes.
