  • Propeller on Danish fighter of 1917

    Hi all - any idea of what this propeller might be? Working from a scale drawing, it's probably 7' 6" in diameter. Looks similar to those fitted to the de Havilland DH.5 or DH.6...

    The fighter itself is a replica of the Nielsen & Winther Aa.

    Do you know what engine that is? The shape of the propeller looks very similar to the Sopwith Camel propeller used with a Clerget engine. I have one but don't have it on the web site yet. It is longer than 7'6", though, as most of them were.

      Engine

      The engine's a 90hp Thulin - a Swedish copy of the le Rhone. The drawing I've got that indicates the diameter of the propeller disc is pretty crude, so my 7' 6" estimate could be considerably off...

        There's not a great difference in size. The Camel prop is 2590 mm, for instance, and that's a rather typical size.

        Here's a photo of the Camel prop;

        While it certainly bears some definite similarities, there are subtle differences as well. There were thousands and thousands of different designs for propellers even by the end of WW1, so you really can only identify them positively by drawing numbers.

        Are there any numbers stamped on that one?
