  • Sopwith Propeller but is it a 'Baby' or a 'Strutter'

Good afternoon gentlemen, your help again please.

We have purchased a part propeller, the boss and one blade, I presume it was damaged so cut down as a souvenir.

I will post pictures as soon as I have the chance but the details are:

    No 1621
    Dia 2740
    Pitch 2120

    Wolseley
    LP710C
    110HP
    Clerget
    Sopwith

I have narrowed it down to either a Sopwith Baby or a 1 1/2 Strutter.
Is anyone able to confirm either of these and a possible date please.

    Thank you in anticipation

If Bob Gardner doesn't chime in sooner, I'll check my reference material when I'm home again in about 24 hours. Sometimes if that drawing number applies to several planes, there's no way to tell which one unless it's stamped on the boss.

      Thanks Dave,

I am hoping that Bob has the answer, he is the fount of all knowledge in this area and I already have several of his books, but sadly not one for this company.

        Greetings Joe,

The prop is probably from a Sopwith Strutter and was made by Wolseley. I have recorded other serial nos close to yours.

The prop was also used with this engine for the Sopwith Pup, the Sopwith Bomber and the Armstrong Whitworth FK8. Wolseley is recorded as making SE5A and BE2C aircraft. I have found no evidence that Wolseley, which was part of the Vickers Empire made Sopwith Strutter aircraft, but Vickers at Crayford did and they probably sub-contracted the making of props to Wolseley's prop shop.

Does it carry a Wolseley decal?

        Your data translates in full (for other forumites) as;

        No 1621 Serial Number
        Dia 2740 Diameter in mm
        Pitch 2120 Pitch in mm

        Wolseley Prop Maker
LP710C Drg No. It is a Lang Propeller design. Lang was Sopwith's in-house prop shop.
        110HP Clerget French rotary engine
        Sopwith Aircraft maker

        With kind regards,

        Bob

Thank you very much Bob, a comprehensive answer as always.

Sorry, it does not have any decals

          Best Regards

          Joe
