  • Matthews Brothers 1917-1918 prop?

Is there anyone out there who can help me with this? I am interested in a early wooden prop that the owner says is from a Curtis flying boat built in the 1917-1918 era. The prop is not straight and has curved blades. There is some kind of metal covering the leading edges of the prop but it does not cover the full length of the leading edge. The information on the prop is

    Mathews Brothers, Mfg
    N - 10008
    8'4" LH
    SE 5090
    HS-2

Any help in verifying the identification of this prop would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, that's a fairly commonly found 2 blade prop that was stacked with an identical one to form a 4 blade combination that was used on the Curtiss HS2L flying boat in the late teens. The "S.E." refers to "Steam Engineering", the branch of the Navy that procured propellers at that time.

I have owned and sold several in the past. See this page for information on the last one I owned.
