  • Please help ID and date this propeller

    I am selling an old prop on ebay and would like to identify it first.
    It has the following markings

    8' 4"
    P.5'3"
    .OX5.
    585
    S.C. 51790

        It's a "toothpick" style prop most likely used on a Curtiss Jenny with an OX5 engine. The "S.C." is a Signal Corps number of no real significance. The other numbers refer to its diameter and pitch. That style evolved from the need to reduce manufacturing costs, since there were a large number of nose-over type crashes with the Jennies which destroyed to prop. The toothpick design required less wood to manufacture.

        Obviously, a section of the trailing edge has been removed.
