Welcome to our forum. We don't have German props from WW1 here very often and your info and photographs are most welcome. Incidentally, I'm writing a book on German WW1 props and if you have any more photos or info please contact me. My e-mail address is on my website. There's a link to it below.

I have the following info on the prop, which I hope might be of some help.

Firstly the opening price is much above its market value, which is about €1200-1500 Euro.

The prop was made by Herr Professor Doktor Rahtjen and dates from around 1916-17. Props made by him are rare. Most of his designs were made by BFI, Bleicheroder Flugzeug Industrie GmbH, located in Bleicherode in the Southern uplands of the Harz Mountains.

Dr Rahtjen made propellers from at least 1911 in his own right. Idflieg records BFI on 8 February 1918, June 1918 and 31 August 1918 so it is likely that BFI were recruited late in the war to make props to Dr Rahtjen’s design.

The dimensions of this prop indicate that it was made for aircraft which could fly from 130-150kph in the Idflieg (ie Army) classification. There is no indication on the photos which show if it was Army or Navy. If you can find the Geprüft (tested, approved) mark near the hub this will tell us.

Army aircraft in this class using the Benz 150ps engine were
AEG CI, CIV
AGO CI
DFW CI, CII and CIV

Also I have records of props of these dimensions fitted with the Benz 150ps engine to the Alb CIII and the Rumpler CI.

Of the Navy aircraft that you mention, the Hansa Brandenburg KDW and W12 also used the Benz 150ps engine in the early versions but I only have the Alb W4 listed as using the Mercedes 160ps engine.

The prop is in excellent original condition but has suffered from the wood wasp which has laid its eggs in the soft woods. It will need to be treated in case this infestation is still active.
