  • Determining actual age of prop by SC number

I have a WW I era Paragon prop and would like to determine the year it was built. I have determined from the website that it was most likely utilized on an Jenny (OX-5). Facing the prop, on the right side of the hub it is stamped
8"3" X 5(6)00 Right Hand. On the left side of the hub the Signal Corp number is legible except for one digit. It is either SC 12633 or SC 12603. Does anybody know if this SC number can be correlated to year of manufacture?

I don't think the SC can be accurately traced, but I do think that they went sequentially so the higher the number the later it is. The problem is that we don't have any real good reference points of known SC numbers to start with.

Thanks Dave - I assume there is not another way of accurately dating the age of these things. Does anybody know when the American Propeller Manufacturing Co. went out of business?

There was a volunteer at the National Air and Space Museum who was trying to research the company, which started in Washington and moved to Baltimore, but the last I spoke with him, which was years ago, he really hadn't been able to turn up much. I know they did continue for several years after WW1 but how long is a mystery to me.

In a slightly post-war brochure that I saw, they stated that they had manufactured over 25,000 wooden propellers by the end of WW1.
