Hello,
Let me introduce myself, I'm bibi057 from France and I'm 60 years old.
I think you know the history of the first air depot (Colombey les Belles) from the first world war? I'll give you a brief outline.
I'm originally from Colombey les Belles in Lorraine, near Toul. During the First World War, the Americans arrived in 1917, and the Colombey site was chosen by the US Signal Corps to set up the 1st aircraft depot. The First Air Depot . (a large, flat site with room for 2 runways, bordered by forest to conceal most of the buildings, and close to the front line).
They arrived on November 1, 1917 and left in July/August 1919, after dismantling the camp and burning around 350 aircraft!
From November 1, 1917 to November 11, 1918, 2,000 aircraft passed through the depot to be equipped and repaired for all the air bases on the front, making it the largest depot in the West.
The Americans had very few aircraft in 1917, so they asked their allies to provide them with a list of aircraft that could be manufactured in the USA.
They chose the English DE HAVILLAND DH 4 bomber because it had a 375hp Rolls Royce engine.
After numerous modifications, they adapted their 400hp Liberty 12 engines, which became the . It was the only US-made aircraft involved in the conflict.
Returning to my 2 propellers, I found them in an attic in a village 20 kms from Colombey les belles. I was surprised to discover that one of the 2 was made by DAYTON WRIGHT AIPLAINE . CO OHIO which only made the DE HAVILLAND DH4 in the USA! from 1917 to 1918 (around 3,500 examples of which 1,600 arrived in France) other US firms also made this plane, but in smaller numbers. 4600 in all.
The other propeller was made by WESTMOORE PROPELLER in CHICAGO. ( identical to the Dayton Wright )
These are 2 crashed propellers that have been cut at the ends! I don't know why? or for what reason they were kept? one of the propellers still has dirt and grass in the crack.
It's certain that they were salvaged from the First Air Depot, as most of the US DH4 were parked there.
I can't find anything about the WESTMOORE propeller brand! Perhaps you have information on this brand? and also other information on these propellers?
I enclose some photos of the 2 propellers.
