Propellor boss? Engine turning? Or what?

I inherited this from my grandfather, who was in the RFC in WWI. So it may date from that era, or, possibly, his son (my uncle)'s service in WWII.

It was made into a photo frame at some point with what looks like a piece of shaped, laminated wood (piece propellor?) in the centre.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks, Andy, that does look very much like it in pic 2. And that's the answer to why it had those 'pegs' around the rim, which had baffled me most of all!
