Wooden Prop Plans

Hi I'm also new to the forum and am looking for details or sections on the Axial propeller as used on the Albatros DIII, as I need to create a scale prop for a 1/3rd scale flying model. Could someone also enlighten me as to what wood these were made of, I have seen mahogany mentioned but how does this account for obvious light/dark laminations on photographs.

Hi Steve,

Germany used a mixture of imported woods such as mahogany and native woods such as elm for their props. Mahogany and elm gives the striated look. Also native European walnut was used with ash and elm. Some props were made of pine; Rahtjen for example.

Bob, many thanks, just need to find some plans now, also any thoughts on a timber supplier, the prop will be about 36" and I believe 7 laminations

I don't think they exist anywhere. I have never heard of any in my researches. If you come across any, please get a copy for me as well !

A belated thought. I can send you photographs of a few Axial props if that would help, although none are from a DIII. Also, I have several photographs of Axial decals. These were silver and black. The silver gradually became lighter with age so that modern reproductions often portray them as black and white.

A belated thought. I can send you photographs of a few Axial props if that would help, although none are from a DIII. Also, I have several photographs of Axial decals. These were silver and black. The silver gradually became lighter with age so that modern reproductions often portray them as black and white.

Need New cross section

Hi Dave,

I was able to carve the prop for the museum display using a profile drawing that I sketched and a lot of time with hand planes and a rasp. Actually came out rather nice.
