  • Value of Wooden Chipmunk Propeller

My garage recently burnt to the ground. Inside was a antique wooden chipmunk propeller. It had come from a plane my (recently deceased) dad had crashed into a womans front yard in the '50s. His mates had taken the prop from the plane and drilled out the core and placed a brass barometer inside then hand-mounted it. It was then presented to him. I need to confirm an estimated value of it for insurance purposes. Am wondering if you could help. (Not that insurance could EVER really replace it's value!)

    Bronwyn,

I am sorry to hear of the loss of your Dad's Chipmunk prop. I regret to tell you that the insurance value is not high. A prop like this would sell at auction for about £150-£200 which means a dealer would sell it for about £400 once he had restored it. This latter figure is the insurance value. However, you are unlikely to find a replacement prop quickly. They seldom come up at auction and it might take some years to find one.

    With regards,

    Bob
