I am researching local manufacturers in Halifax who were active in WW1. A local firm, J Sagar, who made woodworking machinery, designed and made a propeller shaping machine. I have a photograph of it.

Who would have purchased machines like this? Would it have been under a government contract?

There is a picture on your site of a workshop where they appear to be turning out hundreds of these things. Which works were those?

Sorry for the late response.

Most of the propeller manufacturers were under various government contracts during WW1. One of them, Hartzell, promised production levels of 250 propellers a day. The American Propeller and Manufacturing Company had produced over 25,000 wooden propellers by the end of WW1.

While there were a dozen or so of the big contractors for the U.S. there were litterally over 100 other companies, mostly furniture or piano manufacturers, who manufactured some propellers for the government.

Can you post a photo of the machine you mentioned?
