  • Belgian spad propeller

    Hi everybody

A few mounts ago, I acquired this nice BELGIAN propeller, made by
Sabca. Sabca was a main airplane and spare parts supplier since 1920
and still excists. The propeller was made in July 1922 and was fitted on
an Hispano 200 hp engine, maybe for the Spad XIII which was part of
the Belgian airforce a that time.
Here some details of the inscriptions on the hub:

    SPAD HISP 200
    SABCA 32
    JUILL 22

    EKELMANS

Also 2 small stamps on the propeller inner blades.

Does somebody has an idea what the name Ekelmans means? Maybe
    the name of the designer?
I dont have much knowledge about Sabca propellers. If somebody on the
forum has an other Sabca propeller is his possess, feel free to contact me and shear some details.

Best regards and happy new year

    Gino

Very pretty propeller and looks to be in good condition for its age. The left hand rotation is certainly consistent with the geared Hisso engine on the SPAD XIII.

I've never heard of the manufacturer, but that's not surprising.

      Hi Dave
Indeed it is a quite pretty propeller. There was an other Sabca propeller on the
forum some time ago.Sabca build several airplanes in the past and also build
other famous airplanes under licence.(Handley page w8, nieuport,breguet,dh9
and many others). They still provide technical support on the f16 and make some Airbus parts. The responsible person for the wood section mister Poncelet
who left Sabca in 1932 created his own propeller company in Belgium which still excists today and make wooden propellers for all kind of airplanes.

      Best regards
      Gino
